Health Commissioner Advocates Increased Testing Amid COVID-19 2nd Wave

The Lagos state commissioner for health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has urged residents to guard against the second wave of the pandemic as it resumes its early stage by going for testing.

Addressing newsmen at Alausa in Lagos, Prof. Abayomi said 48 per cent of COVID-19 patients in the state do not know they are carriers of the virus.

According to him, it has been noticed that most people who develop symptoms fail to go for testing but rather self medicate which has led to a high rate of community transmission.

The commissioner further revealed that testing had increased from 1000-3000 people per day and for every 100 people treated, 13 per cent came out positive.
He, therefore, urged all residents to abide by all the safety protocols of social distancing, personal hygiene and use of face mask to guard against this virus.

He appealed to residents who have symptoms of cough, catarrh, loss of taste and smell to go for testing in any of the accredited centres and avoid self-medication.

He also warned inbound travellers from presenting fake tests results, or not self-isolating as stricter regulations of defaulters will be activated.

Rita Omodia reports that the overall statistics presently at the isolation centres, indicates that there are 75 confirmed positive cases and 28 suspected cases waiting for test result.
