FIDA Sensitizes market on genital mutilation

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Edo state chapter is calling on women to stop willfully placing a person in fear of physical injury particularly through female circumcision or genital mutilation.


The women lawyer made this known during their sensitization exercise across the streets and major market of Benin metropolis as part of the effort to mark the 2019 FIDA week.

The state chairperson of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Edo state chapter Barrister Iryn Omorogiuwa said the fight against social issues such as violence,  victimization, economic discrimination, harmful traditional practices, and gender inequality can never be overemphasized by any society, stating that FIDA as organization is committed to fighting for the right of indigent women.

Some other female lawyers who spoke during the occasion are Barrister Florence Okundaye, Barrister Elizabeth Iyamu-Ojo.

The representatives of the ministry of women affairs Mrs. Unwozor Florence said the VAPP law is of immense benefit to Edo state as it prohibits female circumcision or genital mutilation and forceful ejection of homes.

The market women's and street people saw this as a welcome development.

FIDA, however, urged the public to report any cases of violence to the police and other security agencies for further action.
