The Nigerian Senate has stressed the urgent need to fast-track the construction of the Badagry-Sokoto Expressway to promote economic growth and development in the country.

This intervention by the Senate came upon the floor of the Red Chamber at plenary Wednesday, with a call on the government to ensure completion of the project which is over 40 years old.

This subject was thrown up by way of a motion sponsored by Kwara North Senator, Sadiq Umar.

In their different submissions, a cross-section of the Senators restated how strategic the road is called on the government to accord it the attention it requires.

On his part, Senate President Ahmad Lawan called on the Executive to provide avenues for investors in the road sector.

The Badagry-Sokoto Expressway was initiated as part of the 4th National Development Plan commenced by the General Olusegun Obasanjo regime in 1978, but was abandoned in 1979 after Alhaji Shehu Shagari came into power.
