Nigerians have been expressing diverse reaction to the pronouncement of shift in the date of the general elections by the independent National Electoral Commission.

The Chairman of the Commission, Attairu Jega had yesterday announced the adjustment in the election time table, which initially is to commence next Saturday, stressing that the postponement was due to the security situation in some parts of the country.

Mixed reactions have been trailing the postponement of the much awaited general elections in Nigeria by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

For some days now, there had been apprehension about the proposed shift in the date of the elections in the country, with various stakeholders warning the Electoral Commission to stick to the date set for the poll.

However, the pronouncement of the shift in the date of the elections by the Chairman of the Commission, Attairu Jega from February 14 and 28 to March 28 and April 11, 2015 have been eliciting series of reaction.

Speaking with our correspondent in Abeokuta, Senator Femi Okunronmu said the change in the date of the election by the electoral body was logical as such was premised on security report adding that, though most Nigerians have no access to such privilege information but it was also an indication that the electoral body was not ready for the poll.

Also in his reaction, the Governorship Candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria, Rotimi Paseda said the Commission should be commended for it effort so far but the election should have been conducted as schedule in order to avoid rancour within the polity.

Senator Okunronmu stated that an indication to the low level of preparation by the Electoral body is the issue of Permanent Voter Cards stressing that, if‎ the poll should be conducted as scheduled, many electorate in the southwest and Southeast than in the Northern part of the country, where there had been heavy distribution of the cards.

He added that the issues of the cards remain an important factor that cannot and must not be toiled with if Nigeria is to have a free, fair and credible election process.

Also on the implication of the shift in the date of the poll, the Senator stated that it has no negative consequence on the country noting that, the shift is still within the period approved by the electoral act.
